Latin Heritage Celebration (LHC)

In 1988, the federal government officially designated September 15 through October 15 as Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM). This proclamation, signed by President Ronald Reagan, came after several decades of advocacy, passion, and persistence from community and political leaders. Nationally, Hispanic Heritage Month encompasses South and Central America, the Caribbean, and Spain.

The George Washington University (GW) presented its first annual Latin Heritage Celebration (LHC) in 1996. LHC programs promote the values and traditions of South and Central America, the Caribbean, and Spanish cultures, including student culture shows and performances, distinguished guest lectures, seminars, and educational events.

Being involved in LHC is a meaningful way for Latine organizations at GWU to gain visibility, connect with one another, and celebrate shared culture and identity. The main mission is to showcase the rich and diverse community within GWU’s Latine organizations by highlighting their unique contributions, traditions, and voices.  For more information, follow @lhc.gwu on Instagram.

The MSSC does not host these events, but offers logistical support for student organizations who request it.
