The MSSC is a hub for culture, education, and community —a cornerstone of the George Washington University. Rooted in a rich history of legacy, collaboration, unrestricted joy, and intellectual curiosity, we actively center all identities to provide students with a holistic experience.

The MSSC operates from an ethic of care, with the belief that all students deserve a healthy educational environment where they are supported to be their authentic selves. Through revolutionary academic enrichment, intentional programming, experiential learning, and dialogue across differences, the MSSC empowers all GW students to become audacious advocates, compassionate leaders, and the next generation of coalition builders committed to championing social justice.

The MSSC envisions itself as a place where institutional power meets student advocacy and where inspiration creates systems of change. We aim to curate spaces that transform university culture in order to build communities of integrity, connection, and lifelong learning.

We have bold dreams of a world where all students practice intentional self-reflection, justice-oriented service, and leadership grounded in shared humanity to influence a more radical, just, and inclusive community within and beyond the walls of GW.

During the 60's, the civil rights and affirmative action movements changed the the landscape of American race relations. College students nationwide provided substantial energy behind the political, economic, and societal changes that took place. Appropriately, universities and colleges answered the challenge to open their doors and policy to provide access to education for black and other minority students. In support of the students, Multicultural Centers were developed to provide academic, social, political, and advocacy support to insure the students short and long term retention, thriving, and eventual graduation.

The MSSC was founded at GW in 1968 in response to a national movement led by the implementation of the Adams Order requiring the desegregation of the public universities in 13 states. The spirit of the movement was to eliminate the present day effect of past discrimination. University support programs, resources, and facilities like MSSC became the norm nationwide.
