Pride Month 2022

Pride Month is celebrated each June to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall uprising, to protest against injustice and inequality, and to recognize the impacts of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual (LGBTQIA+) individuals. The 1969 Stonewall uprising comprised of six days of riots in retaliation for ongoing police violence towards patrons of a Greenwich Village gay bar, the Stonewall Inn. A response to targeted harassment and systemic inequality, the Stonewall riots are generally considered to have been a catalyst for the gay rights movement in the United States and around the world. Yearly commemorations of the beginning of the uprising (June 28) began in 1970 in New York City and since then have transformed into celebrations that span the entire month of June and are held across the country and around the world.

Today, GW celebrates LGBTQIA+ Pride by raising high the achievements and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual members of the GW Community. LGBTQIA+ students, staff, faculty and alumni enhance the GW educational experience by being role models in their embrace of the GW values, especially openness, diversity, and courage.  For more information about how you can celebrate LGBTQIA+ Pride Month wherever you are, please browse the following tabs.

7:30 PM

Do you ever wake up one morning at 2:30 in the afternoon to discover that there is a global pandemic which makes your kid’s schools shut down so you have to raise them yourself? What the hell kind of nonsense is that? It’s in these moments of crisis that you really find out what you’re made of. If there’s one thing we all have in common, it’s that we are fundamentally different people than we were just two years ago. What have you learned? What did you try? How did you cope? How heavy was your recycle bin from all the empty bottles? When life seems to get too crazy and the world is crapping on your lawn, it’s time to strap on your big-girl boots, grab your breakfast vodka and light off a few CHERRY BOMBS AND BOTTLE ROCKETS. There’s nothing better than walking into your new self with a bang!

The new show from DIXIE LONGATE is a web of story telling that only America’s favorite southern redhead can create. Catch up with everyone’s favorite Tupperware lady in her first ever stand up show where she talks about everything from Loretta Lynn to alien abductions, pogo sticking to “safe words” in that rapid-fire delivery that has made her an international sensation.

This Pride Month, the Delegation of the European Union to the United States and the Capital Pride Alliance are proud to host “The Visibility Factor,” a discussion and celebration of LGBTQI+ visibility around the world. While protections exist today on both sides of the Atlantic that ensure equal treatment of the law regardless of gender identity and sexual orientation, LGBTQI+ visibility still varies greatly in definition and actions.

Our international panel of esteemed guests will share their own LGBTQI+ stories, highlight why visibility is important in their daily lives, and explore ideas for making LGBTQI+ individuals more visible around the world.

Panel

  • Jessica Stern, U.S. Special Envoy to Advance the Human Rights of LGBTQI+ Persons
  • Michael Ahrens, Minister Counselor, Embassy of Germany
  • Heracles-Spyridon Aktypis, Counselor, Embassy of Greece
  • Monika Nemeth, Commissioner, Advisory Neighborhood Commission 3F, Washington DC
  • Michael Lavers, International News Editor, Washington Blade (moderator)

ASL Interpretation will be provided.

Poly Group Discussion (Zoom)

Zoom
7:00 PM

Welcome and join us for the next Poly Discussion group, starting at 7:00 PM. We meet on the third Thursday of the month.

What is polyamory, you may ask! Polyamory is the practice, desire, or acceptance of having more than one intimate relationship at a time with the knowledge and consent of everyone involved. This group is designed to be a forum for people at all different stages to discuss polyamory and other consensual non-monogamous relationships.

Newcomers will be given a basic introduction into what polyamory is and what some of the advantages and disadvantages are. Attendees who are already in relationships will be given the opportunity to discuss their situations and get advice from the group if they feel that would be helpful. This group is open to people of all sexual orientations and people who are interested in non-monogamy in both kinky and non-kinky relationships.

Grag Queen

City Winery DC (1350 Okie St NE)
8:00 PM

City Winery Washington DC presents Grag Queen live in concert on Wednesday, June 22 at 8:00 PM.

There’s a new Queen in town! If you were lucky enough to watch Queen of the Universe (which aired on Paramount +) then you’re well aware that on the season’s finale 26-year-old Grag Queen was crowned (literally!) the first winner of the competition.

The Brazilian singer wowed audiences with her show stopping performances of Andra Day’s "Rise Up" and Cyndi Lauper’s "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" among others. Grag was thrilled with her victory. “I feel SO accomplished! This award symbolizes a dream come true. I am sure my family and my country are proud of me.” She’s been lauded by fellow singing Queens Alaska Thunderfuckwho said, "Grag is one of the most technically skilled singers out there, but it’s her stage presence, sense of humor, and charisma that make her an absolute superstar." Trixie Mattel added, “She’s a star before the song even starts, and then when she begins singing - it’s over bitch.”

A staunch supporter of the LGBTQ community in Brasil, Grag – born Gregory Mohd - she’s very well-aware of how many young people are afraid to come out to be their true selves. “We live in a country that kills LGBTQ people more than any other, and our transgender people’s [life expectancy] is only 35 years old and it’s not fair. We are still trying to find some place of peace….I really want to use this platform to make people know that this situation is crazy and it’s real.”
